Warsaw 2009: Sessions

Methods and approaches for coding textual survey variables

Planned on Tuesday, 16:30 - 18:30 in Room 2.4.

Coordinators:

  • Stefania Macchia; Statistics Italy, Italy

Description:

Survey questionnaires often contain open-ended questions which require a peculiar treatment to be used for statistical purposes. The attribution of a code according to a pre-defined classification is a quite delicate phase of the survey process because it requires time, resources and, if manually performed, it does not guarantee the standardization of the results.

The session will collect papers about the way free text answers to open-questions are treated in order to assign them a code:

- which are the methodological approaches used in the survey process to reach this aim

- which are the techniques – IT tools – used

- how NSI will cope with this particular subject for the approaching Census.
