Warsaw 2009: Sessions

Media-reported events: the context of surveys

Planned on Thursday, 14:00 - 16:00 in Room 1.4.

Coordinators:

  • Ineke Stoop; The Netherlands Institute for Social Research/SCP, Netherlands

Description:

As a corollary to the European Social Survey information is collected on the events that happen in each participating country during fieldwork. Events related to the topic of the survey should be taken into account by substantive researchers when analyzing and interpreting differences across countries and over time. In the first three rounds of the study hundreds of media-reported events have been collected and described by almost 30 countries. Experiments with computer coding of events have been conducted by Gesis/Mannheim. Additionally, the University of Bristol and City University have developed an instrument for event reporting and event coding that can be used alongside the ESS and every other survey. In this session, different tools for event reporting will be presented, as well as studies on the relationship between events, attitudes and media use.
